An introduction to Positive Behaviour Support

Learning Outcome:
By the end of this one-day course, participants will have a thorough understanding of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) principles and strategies, enabling them to effectively manage and support individuals with challenging behaviours in school and care settings.
 
Assessment:
Participants will be assessed through group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises to ensure their understanding of PBS principles and their ability to apply these principles in real-world scenarios.
 
Course Conclusion:
Upon completing this one-day course, participants will possess the knowledge and skills necessary to implement Positive Behavior Support effectively in school and care settings. They will be better equipped to create a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment for individuals with challenging behaviours while adhering to legal and ethical standards.


Session 1: Introduction to Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the fundamental principles and concepts of PBS.
  2. Recognise the significance of PBS in promoting a positive and inclusive environment in care settings.
  3. Explore real-world examples of the benefits of PBS in education and care.

Session 2: Understanding Behaviours that Challenge
Learning Objectives:
  1. Challenge stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding challenging behaviours.
  2. Identify and describe underlying causes and triggers for behaviours that challenge.
  3. Analyse the functions of challenging behaviours from the individual's perspective.
 
Session 3: Managing and Responding to Challenging Behaviours
Learning Objectives:
  1. Recognize potential triggers for challenging behaviours.
  2. Understand and apply proactive and reactive strategies effectively.
  3. Gain insight into the emotional arousal cycle and its significance in managing behaviours.
  4. Develop skills for appropriate responses to incidents of challenging behaviour.
 
Session 4: Documentation, Planning, and Legal Responsibilities
Learning Objectives:
  1. Develop proficiency in behaviour charting and support plan creation.
  2. Understand legal and ethical responsibilities in the context of PBS.
  3. Recognize the roles and responsibilities of staff in school and care settings.
